Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

California reality on such a summer’s day

The trickiest thing about travelling to a new place is figuring out the plumbing. You take one look at the taps in the shower/bath and think: “Stand back, what will happen if I turn/swivel/adjust this thing?”!

Having sorted that out (and a nap after the flight!), I ventured out into the California sunshine. It really was a glorious early summer day, crisp and not too hot. I walked down to the Berkeley Marina area, picking up a couple of caches at little parks on the way, and then finding another 8 or so down on the coast. Most of the bay foreshore is reclaimed land, and what was once wasteland is now being rehabilitated into park and wetlands. There are cycling and walking tracks, and dog off-leash areas, and plenty of room for flying kites, including a huge flying fish. There is a great view out over the bay to San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge was doing its iconic misty thing. I reckon I walked 12-15kms all up (if I was clever my GPS could tell me, but I forgot to reset it and I haven’t ever tried to just download its information and work with that), and so I’m feeling simultaneously rejuvenated and exhausted. Time for bed, I think. With luck the exercise and sunshine will help my body clock to adjust. In reality, it probably won’t.

Can you walk on that bridge..looks like a full days hike, can you cast out a line from there?..Obviously you’d be looking to catch [flying fish] from them heights
