Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Midlands #2014-3S

The previous blog post doesn’t tell the full story of just how crazy yesterday was, suffice to say that by the end of the day I was in Launceston, and by 15 minutes before my class was due to start today I was back in Hobart. Both legs of the trip — up and back — […]

Gulp! I didn’t see that coming

Nearly three weeks ago, I had a phone call to say that the Bishop of my Church ward wanted to see me (a “ward” is like a parish; this post is going to be riddled with explanations for my non-LDS/Mormon friends (and riddled with lots of parentheses (sorry))). I made myself presentable (I’d just returned from […]

Moods of the Mountain #29

Finally some rain clouds.

The full “Moods of the Mountain” collection can be […]

Regatta 2014

The March long weekend brings the annual Scout Guide Regatta (or Guide Scout Regatta, as the Girl Guides would have it!), and this year’s was blessed with wonderful warm weather. We were particularly excited this year: not only was most of our troop in attendance but, after several years out of the water, our lightweight wooden […]

12 of 12, March 2014

Today was a busy day, with barely time to take photographs let alone thinking about making them “good” or “interesting”. I helped run a day of professional learning for about 20 teachers, and I had an evening rehearsal with Loose Canon (this is usually held on Thursday nights, but we needed to change this week (and […]

Midlands #2014-2NS

Today’s trip included some lovely light and weather effects on both legs of the journey: early morning mist on the way northwards, and sunlit mountains and stormy clouds on the way back (unfortunately I didn’t manage to capture the lightning that occurred around the time and location of the final shot, and the contrast between light […]

Midlands #2014-1S

My work this semester is going to involve more than the usual number of trips between the campuses in Hobart and Launceston, which means more than the usual number of drives up and down the Midlands Highway. I confess that I begrudge the time, often, but it is a lovely drive, and despite the fact that […]

Too nice a day for marking another thesis

Or, indeed, doing any of several other things that are swamping me.

In fact, I did get some work done on the thesis and other jobs, but it was a Saturday, and a glorious day to boot, and there was a little kayak trip that I’d been wanting to do with my brother, and so upon seeing […]
