Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Regatta 2014

The March long weekend brings the annual Scout Guide Regatta (or Guide Scout Regatta, as the Girl Guides would have it!), and this year’s was blessed with wonderful warm weather. We were particularly excited this year: not only was most of our troop in attendance but, after several years out of the water, our lightweight wooden patrol boat La Perouse had been repaired and was ready to do battle in various events (although in the rush to get it ready we’d hadn’t really had time to do any practice in it!).

The Scouts had a wonderful time and were able to take La Perouse to victory in a couple of events, much to their delight. Poor old George Bass, our heavy fibreglass boat, was not much in demand although he/she/it did get out for the sail past.

Here are some pictures (I took plenty including some nice ones showing kids in more detail but I tend not to include these in my blog).

There is a wide variety of events for participants, including greasy pole, inner tube races, and dinghy rescue (with the trusty Bob).

We rigged La Perouse for the first time in years, and it looked good under sail (when I say “we” I mean other people did, because I was doing something else and I have next to no clue about this).

After years of rowing the extremely heavy George Bass the kids were excited about being able to row La Perouse, and our under 15 team (incorporating two under 13s, one of whom actually rowed three long distance events in a row) took out the long distance and sprint events, which delighted everyone—including “Buffer” seen in the second photo below.

All in all, everyone had a good time, but I confess we were all pretty weary by the end.
