Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

What all the fuss is about

Apparently macarons are the new big (small) foodie thing.

I’d never heard of them until recently and since I seem to be haunting cafes somewhat less frequently than I did in Melbourne I haven’t had any chance encounters with them. I came to know of them through a friend’s blog that records her pursuit of the perfect […]

Moods of the Mountain #4

Last night the weather was decidedly unpleasant outside* and the morning had a very chilly feel to it when I woke up. An initial glance out the window revealed little, since there were clouds on the lower foothills. A closer inspection of the hills upstream (to the right of the photo) revealed a low and rather […]

Escape to a summit sunset

I spent most of this Saturday in my office.

In my opinion Saturdays and offices should not be allowed in the vicinity of each other, but the joys of being in a new job — and it won’t stop being new until after I’m not doing things for the first time, which implies the end of 2013 […]

On being an academic, part 1 – Introduction

I have been in academia since 1989, or even longer if you count some stints as a student employed as a tutor. Over those years my own roles have changed as I have adjusted my discipline focus and climbed the academic ladder, but there have also been significant changes in the sector. I have been thinking […]

12 of 12, August 2012

We are currently in the winter months, and I confess to having forgotten how cold it can be in Hobart sometimes. There have been some bitterly chilly days that have dumped snow on the mountain, and I’ve had to rug up even in my office.

We are now into August, though; the last of the hiemal months […]
