Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

A bus shelter with a touch of class

The good folk of Fern Tree (in Tasmania) may not have the most frequent of bus services, but they know how to wait for their buses in style. They have kitted out their bus stop shelter with panache, community spirit, and a delightful sense of quirkiness.

I love […]

Paths not previously taken

My niece and I decided to have a girls’ day out yesterday, and she was happy to (a) let me decide the destination and (b) find a few caches on the way. The day started cool and blustery, but I decided to head up Mt Wellington anyway, because there were a couple of puzzle caches I’d […]

Christmas Day, 2010

I’m including just a couple of photos of the Christmas day festivities with my Mum’s side of the family, as we gathered for Christmas lunch.

For the past couple of years my Mum has commented that she feels as if she steps into the role of my Nanna M, her mother, who used to be the presiding […]

Carolling

This year, thanks to the occasionally useful auspices of Facebook, I knew that TUMS’s Christmas eve carolling gig at the hospital was going ahead without having to wait until I actually turned up on the night.

I’m not entirely sure if Facebook is also responsible for the fact that there were about 30 singers in attendance, which […]

Happy Christmas 2010

To all my readers — my vast internet audience of millions (yeah, right!), including friends met in real life and seen often or rarely, virtual friends and acquaintances, the lurking silent mystery readers, folk who have ended here by accident, and even spammers (yes, it’s Christmas and I’m feeling charitable!) — may you be blessed with […]

No place like dome

Yesterday was the 20/12. Nobody had realised that this was a particularly auspicious date until after we had decided to hold the event about to be described; at the time we were planning it, all that mattered was that people seemed to be available at the time (although that didn’t stop outside agents imposing meetings upon […]

Flying visit

It’s been nearly two years since I’ve seen my Adelaide brother and his family, and since they have increased their number by one and aren’t able to join everyone else at Christmas, I decided to pay them an all-too-brief flying visit.

My new niece is gorgeous (as new nieces and nephews always are!), and after some initial […]

Know time; like the present

I arrived home today to find a curious container hanging from my doorbell.

I had been expecting something this afternoon, as a couple of text messages from my friend Maybelline (the one who made a screenprint of icons capturing my silly little “Dramatis Persona” quote) had suggested that she was hatching plans … but I had no […]

The Muppet Christmas Carol

One of my Christmas traditions is to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol, starring Michael Caine and a large number of famous Muppets, including Kermit the Frog, Gonzo, and Miss Piggy.

It was the first Muppet film made after Jim Henson’s death, and when I first saw it I remember being worried about how well Steve Whitmire would […]

Twin set and pearls

Shortly after Robyn and I learned about our promotions to Associate Professor, there was a bit of a tea-room conversation about the consequences of this.

This included discussion about how the maturity and responsibility of the position should be reflected in dressing up with a greater degree of sartorial splendour as befitting the rank.

Somehow — after the […]
