Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Moods of the Mountain #91

Snow and Bridgewater Jerry on a chilly winter’s morning.

The following day — at a similar time — some of the snow had melted and a bank of cloud was scudding southward across the summit.

12 of 12, August 2017

It’s a rather scrappy 12 of 12 this month: it was a cold and wet day, I kept forgetting to take photos, and when I did take them they were pretty ordinary shots (actually, “ordinary” overstates how good they were; they were lousy, and I only included them in order to make sure that I had […]

Moods of the Mountain #90

Today there was a lovely winter sunrise over the mountain. The sun, which was rising behind me, first lit up the clouds.

Five minutes later it set the mountain aglow.

And if you look closely at this zoomed in shot, you can just make out some residual snow dusting the rocks as the rocks of the Organ Pipes […]

Black Mountain Tower, Canberra

Once the conference finished, one of the attendees offered my friends and me a lift to the top of Black Mountain, which overlooks Canberra. There is an observation tower at the top and, after photographing the cool lift/elevator indicators (and failing to be smart enough to also time the trip, thus reducing the number of interesting […]

12 of 12, July 2017

This is the post in which I attend a maths teachers’ conference and demonstrate my incapacity to identify and stop at a count of 12. That’s irony for you.

Last week I finally got around to getting myself a “professional” Twitter account for my work identity, so that I can join the large number of maths education […]

Mt Charlie ghosts

A trip to Melbourne for a conference allowed me to plan an extra day doing a little maintenance on some of my Victorian caches. The most problematic one — in terms of damage and distance to travel to get to it — was on Mt Charlie, about 50 minutes north of Melbourne, not far from a […]

Midlands 2017-#2S

This year is proving to have very few trips northward for work; here it is June, and this is only the second Midlands photo entry. I had a day trip to Launceston today, to meet with one of my PhD students and, later, one of my work colleagues. On the northward leg I was running late, […]

Moods of the Mountain #89

There was a lovely lenticular cloud over Mt Wellington this morning as the sun rose.

12 of 12, June 2017

This month’s 12th fell on the Monday of the long weekend, and, for a variety of reasons (not the least of which was the fact that I had spent the morning reading a not-totally-rivetting literature review chapter), I felt the need to get out for a walk on Mt Wellington. I decided to pick an approximate […]

Moods of the Mountain #88
