Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Teaching numbers

We farewelled some of our students yesterday—students who are finishing their four-year Bachelor of Education program and who are about to embark on careers as primary school teachers. I was asked to say a few words at their farewell function, and although I wanted perhaps a little sentimentality, being me I also wanted to do something […]

Absent-minded Associate Professor

I’m not entirely sure to what extent or for how long I’ve aspired to reach the lofty goals of the title of this post, but I can say that the first part was achieved quickly and easily: I have been vague for longer than I can remember.

The second part has just been attained as well, so […]

Mandelbrot memories

Apparently Benoît Mandelbrot passed away last week. He is famous for introducing the world to the idea of “fractals” — shapes that are so crinkly that their boundaries are not lovely smooth lines or planes, so that their dimensions are not whole numbers — and the “Mandelbrot set” — that famous heart-shaped blobby thing with circular […]

Mind vs body

We had a Scout camp scheduled for this weekend, and despite the fact that it had become very chilly and that every time I looked outside the rain was bucketing down (the rain radar was even worse than the image shown at right) I was still intending that we would go. We were packed, the food […]

What to do? What to do? What to do?

This month’s 12 of 12 landed on a work day again, and I wasn’t expecting much in the way of “excitement, adventure, really wild things, and awesome photo opportunities*”. As a result, I decided to pick a theme for the day and work with that.

The theme I chose […]

10 year old cache

Ten years ago, not long after satellite signals for navigation became publicly available, a guy named George hid the first cache in Victoria.

Another person to blame!

At 60km from Melbourne, the name “Melbourne’s 1st” is a bit of a misnomer, but he picked a good spot in the hills above Strath Creek, and the cache has survived […]

Muddy boots and overgrown tracks

With my students off on their mid-semester break I felt that I deserved a day off to go caching, since it’s been over a month since my last plastic box (“My name is SamCarter and I am addicted to caching”). My caching friend Muzza was able to swap his day off and so we headed up […]

When a tent is luxury

I know that there are many of you who do not regard camping as providing the most luxurious accommodation in the world (and, when it comes right down to it, I’m inclined to agree … although the views are often fantastic), but have pity on my poor Scouts this weekend. Three of […]

All riiiiiight!!!

I would like to apologise to my neighbours (should they have happened to be home at 2:30pm today).

I had reached the “I am heartily sick of marking” stage (actually I had reached this several years ago, but it’s a recurring theme that rears its ugly head on a regular basis), and when I glanced across at […]

12 of 12, September 2010

It came as a bit of a surprise to me that we’ve just had a whole year of 12ths of the month in which none of them have landed on a Sunday. So, you’ve seen work and recreation, but not a Churchy day … until today.

This month’s set of 12 of 12 photos thus get around […]
