Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Fraser Island

I had one full day off at Jamboree (and much of a second a few days later), and decided to make the most of it by fleeing Scouts and dust and Jamboree food by going to Fraser Island. This is the world’s largest sand island, with beaches, dunes, creeks, forests, mangroves, and lakes. I joined a large group of other escaping leaders (including David, one of the leaders — and one of my ex-Scouts — from my old 17th Essendon troop) on a tour in a big 4WD bus, and this allowed us to see the main sights.

Below: The wreck of the Maheno, a large steamship that washed ashore while under tow and was later used as target practice during World War II exercises.

75 Mile Beach — which isn’t really quite that long — is a wide stretch of sand that is actually a designated highway with an 80km/h speed limit. It is also a landing strip for aircraft and I decided to treat myself to a scenic flight.

We visited Central Station and the silently flowing Wanggoolba Creek, before continuing on to Lake McKenzie, one of the many freshwater lakes that nestle in the sandy hills. It was somewhat overcast at the time of our visit so its famous blueness wasn’t quite so evident, but its clear waters were.

And then it was time to reboard the ferry and return to the Jamboree to see what my little darlings had been up to in my absence.

It was worth the visit, and we were able to see quite a few of the famous sites, but we did rather ruin it for ourselves by cluttering up the place with tourists in yet another example of the Heisenberg Tourist Effect.
