Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

12 of 12, January 2019

The 12th this month fell on “Celebration Day”, which is my least favourite day of Jamboree. The place is invaded by visitors (another 10000 on top of the 10000 already attending), and there is meant to be a festive market day which is a great idea in principle but never seems to entirely work in practice.

Here are 12 photos of the occasion.

In the morning we took some photos of the whole troop and the patrols … and the obligatory silly photo of the leaders.

As suggested, Celebration Day gets rather busy, with the Jamboree streets filled with Scouts, leaders and visitors. Oh, and dust, too.

Here are some of our Scouts manning our stall. We were selling cord bracelets (for “Jamboree dollars”, the currency of the day).  Unfortunately, we did not have a monopoly on the bracelet market and so sales were slow despite much spruiking.

The kids also have real money to spend, and one of the jobs each day is to allow them to withdraw some cash from our “bank” (this helps them to budget).

All the activities that the Scouts do leads to earning a Jamboree award at the end of Jamboree, and so we need to check the records of what things they still need to finish.

Feeding time at the zoo.

Sometimes the Scouts’ spending can be a little amusing. Earlier in the week, some of the Scouts had had a visit to Adelaide and come back with some interesting additions for the troop site, including an inflatable pink unicorn named—imaginatively—”Pinky” and a pop-up paddling pool.

Pinky is, at this stage, in good health.

The paddling pool is starting to look inviting (although filling it is a little tedious).

The paddling pool is now looking less inviting.

And Pinky experiences a demise and can’t be resuscitated despite the best CPR efforts from one of the Scouts.

Thus ends Pinky ( 🙁 ) and another 12 of 12.

[The “12 of 12” project involves taking 12 photos on the 12th of the month. Actually it sometimes involves taking more … but then I select 12 of them to represent the day. This is episode 113.]
