Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

GROIC Day 17

No stories today, just a pile of dead and/or ancient rechargeable batteries, and two redundant chargers.

No stories, but another 17 items gone.

I’m going to have to put in some hard yards this weekend, because I’d like to get rid of plenty of stuff (and there’s certainly plenty to go), and I’d like to have things organised […]

GROIC Day 16

When I moved from Melbourne nearly two years ago there were some last minute things that needed to stay unpacked or which arrived after I’d packed. These were collected into a shoebox, which came with me in the car when I crossed Bass Strait on the ferry.

And then, in the midst of all the unpacking a […]

GROIC Day 15

Okay, something weird happened for this one.

I sorted out all my old Church magazines into three categories — the one for kids, the one for youth, and the one for grown ups – a week or so ago, and took photos of them back then, ready for the three days for which I was going to […]

GROIC Day 14

I have faithfully kept all my received Christmas cards. They are, I will concede, the detritus of a nice tradition, and so candidates for minimising.

I have now faithfully kept the newsier, more memorable ones, while the remainder — some 14 years’ worth of appreciated-but-let’s-face-facts-they-don’t-need-to-be-retained-forever Christmas sentiments — have now been sent to recycling heaven.

In all, the […]

Moods of the Mountain #15

The mountain has been very moody this past week; last night winter snuck back in and dumped some snow on the mountain again, just when we were getting used to the mild warmth and longer evenings of spring.

I should point out that winter has been known to sneak in during summer, as well.

The full “Moods of […]

GROIC Day 13

Today’s choice feels like a bit of a cop-out, as it is a second batch of computer backups burned on CDs/DVDs.

There are, however, 13 of them.

It was also extremely satisfying to smash them with a hammer.

(I should point out that I have two external hard-drive back-ups as my data-protection plan, but it might also be worth […]

12 of 12, October 2013

This morning I bought myself a new little camera, partly in celebration of the fact that this is the 50th 12 of 12 but mainly to replace my old little camera. The old one has served me well, but it has been bounced a few times and it has a few photographic limitations (one of which […]

GROIC Day 12

I’ve had a stack of reasonable quality plastic shopping bags stashed away just in case I needed something a bit better than a supermarket bag on some occasion or other.

But I haven’t.

So I’ve kept a couple (the just-in-case gene is a dominant one) but the rest — over twelve — […]

GROIC Day 11

Okay, this one involves a little creative interpretation, but it’s a good feeling to have these gone.

I moved house over 21 months ago, and actually managed to unpack things quite efficiently at the time. I then stacked the packing boxes neatly into various corners of the garage, promising myself that I would soon call the removal […]

Moods of the Mountain #14

This morning when I awoke, the rising sun not only gave the mountain a warm glow, but also produced a partial rainbow on the lower hills.

The second photo shows the view behind my house to the cloud effects above the sunrise itself.

The full “Moods of the Mountain” collection (with larger versions of the photos) can be […]
