Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

12 of 12, August 2011

Yes, I know I’ve had a photo like this before, but it was the best spare shot left over from the ones taken for this month’s 12 of 12, and it indicates that some of my 12 of 12 shots are going to give you a closer look at my new work place.

In addition to showing […]

Life’s little mysteries #3

(a) Do you think it took 12 months to renovate Hogwarts after the final battle scene and (b) did they let people move in before the rebuilding […]

Moved at last

Well, it’s finally happened.

We’ve really moved. [Given that I helped a little as my parents moved house in the last couple of weeks, you can imagine that I am “over” moving.]

We have farewelled the old building, although with something of a sense of “This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a […]

Why my brain is full

In the process of packing up my office—apparently we’re moving tomorrow, although there is still time for that to be changed (!)—I have discovered why I always feel as if my brain is full.

The last bits of packing up involved the piles of stuff on my desks, which had been filed according to the sedimentary system, […]

Life’s little mysteries #2

Why is it that 50% of the time there is little resemblance between my taxi-driver and his ID photo on the dash?

(Perhaps it would be good not to have answers […]

12 of 12, July 2011

After some 42 years my parents are moving from the family home, since they have found themselves a nice new cosy place that will be a little easier for them to maintain. They are very excited about this … the only real down side is the fact that they actually have to move, and deal with […]

Not a yawning chasm, and I didn’t mind the gap at all

With the last session of the conference finishing during the morning, we had a bit of time to do some sight-seeing. We managed to locate a hire car (we only needed “small” for the three of us, but the smallest they had was an 8-seater van, which they hired to us at the small rate, so […]

I’ve been through the desert on a bike with no name

I am currently in Alice Springs attending a maths education conference.

Alice Springs is in the “red centre”, the famous arid outback of Australia, with its sandy deserts and ancient rocky ranges. “Middle of nowhere” doesn’t come much more literal than this: the next closest town is over 500km away … and I haven’t heard of it!*

Thanks […]

I’ve never understood how come Cinderella’s glass slipper survived the midnight breaking of […]
