Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Thursday 12 Nov

A day that started off being lovely and sunny, but when I allowed myself to escape around lunchtime to do an errand, some sightseeing, and a cache or two, the weather started to deteriorate, and by mid-afternoon it was pouring. I got quite excited in the late afternoon because I […]

PD, BC, AD

Wed 11 Nov

The day began early as I joined Anne and John in heading down to Southampton (or thereabouts) where they were running a morning of professional development (the PD of the title) for primary teachers from Hampshire.

There were many aspects of this that were identical to Australian PD sessions with which I have been involved: […]

Odds and ends 2

Yes, yes, let’s talk about the weather: It was about 4°C when I cycled to work this morning (and it was drizzling), so I was rugged up in just about everything warm and waterproof. It will probably get to about 7°C outside, although it should warm up again towards the end of the week. However, it […]

“The stucco on your baronial castle is scarcely dry”

Saturday 7 Nov

With the weather forecast looking good for the day I donned my cycling gear and decided to head north-west to visit Blenheim Palace.

[I accidentally keep calling it a castle, but it isn’t. I’m not sure of the distinction but I suspect palaces are posher … and maybe castles are built for territorial defence.]

Blenheim Palace […]

First Thursday Maths Night

Here’s an idea for a great social occasion: invite a bunch of people around for the evening and solve maths problems.

You think I’m joking, don’t you!

There were 10 of us (I think (… I can count, I just can’t remember!)) at Anne and John’s last night, and we had a look at a few nice little […]

Grass roots

I make contributions to a number of charities, but in this modern world it has become an automated process: I signed up at some stage and they take money out of my bank accounts. This has the advantage of me not having to think about it too much, and the charity has a nice regular contribution […]

Odds and ends 1

Moon: There was a clear sky last night and the moon was nearly full. I still can’t see the man, though; whereas the rabbit is there but upside down.

Crisp autumn mornings: I love cycling to work on cool crispy clear autumn (and spring) mornings, just as the sun is coming up and just before the traffic […]

The last leaves of autumn

The weather, after being surprisingly mild this past week (around 17°C … apart from in my new office where it seems to be 2° cooler), is about to take a turn for the worse apparently. Everyone is expecting that the coming wind is going to rid the trees of their autumn leaves. Thus it was that […]
