Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

It was a glorious spring day, and, as part of my quest to make sure I do enough walking each day, I went on one of my favourite longer walks in my area. Since it is the 12th, I have decided to take you on my trip as well. The birds and flowers were present in […]

Shrubbery, 10 months on

At the very end of last year, I did something about the skinny little strip of wilderness that runs alongside my drive, and planted a large number of seedlings in my quest to have a shrubbery. At the time, with the seedlings so tiny as seen in the post I made at the time, it was […]

Moods of the Mountain #46

Early morning sunlit cloud mass, with a hint of rainbow.

Lunar Eclipse

There was a lunar eclipse tonight, and I had a chance to further test my new camera. It wasn’t the best night for moon shots (there was some cloud cover, and probably some moisture in the atmosphere making the photos less crisp), but the moon stayed clear enough to watch the whole progression. At totality, which […]

Moods of the Mountain #45

Fortunately the mountain was looking good for allowing the new camera to make its first contribution to the Moods of the Mountain collection.

Tasman Peninsula camera test

The two Saturdays prior to this one had been taken up with marking duty, with a couple of stacks of assignments to return to students. This meant that I was feeling a bit antsy for a trip outdoors, not least because I’d recently purchased my long-promised half-century birthday present and hadn’t really had a chance to […]

Midlands #2014-11NS

There were some lovely things to see on my most recent overnight trip to Launceston, but not enough time for extended stops. Actually, it is slightly more complicated than merely “not having time” to stop, since I think I am pathologically averse to stopping when I’m driving from A to B. It takes considerable mental effort […]

Moods of the Mountain #44

There was a lovely sunset tonight, as you can see. However, it was still captured with my usual compact digital camera because I hadn’t had a chance to get my new toys out of their boxes (I’ll give you more information about this another time, but I finally got around to getting me my promised-to-myself birthday […]

Multicultural masterchef

I am such a master of multicultural cuisine: I cook bolognese sauce in […]

12 of 12, September 2014

This month’s 12th involved a day trip to Melbourne for an all-day meeting, which, despite the change of scenery, did not actually provide much scenery due to being stuck inside for most of the day.

To make matters worse, it involved a wake-up time that had a 4 in the time’s hour position, which was especially problematic […]
