Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

GROIC Day 23

One broken printer (not as old as I would have liked it to be before it suffered a cheaper-to-buy-a-new-one-than-try-to-fix-it glitch), and over 22 issues of the daily newspaper produced on three past Jamborees (2004, 2007 and 2010 … I must have decided not to even bother collecting the 2013 ones). The printer has gone to electronic […]

GROIC Day 22

Some 28 years ago I spent the princely sum of $345 (I found the receipt in my clean up!) on a Fairydown Altimate II tent, which, while not quite as good as the famous-even-then Macpac Olympus that I kind of coveted, was still a pretty good tent. It went on quite a few bushwalks and camps […]

GROIC Day 21

As I have made my way through various crates of memorabilia and stuff, I have set aside a few things that might be okay to send to an op shop (sometimes it’s hard to judge what people might be interested in reusing). So, the pile on the left comprises over 21 items of varying value/usefulness that […]

Moods of the Mountain #18

I don’t think we’ve had crepuscular rays before. And they’re golden-orange, which is not the typical colour for crepuscular rays. And they’re pointing upwards in contrast to the more usual downwards.

This was about as spectacular as it got, though.

Perhaps I am noticing the mountain more, or it’s being more interesting in its moods, but in any […]

GROIC Day 20

As I come in my front door (which I don’t do very often, because I tend to come inside via the garage) my eyes immediately strike the collection of things shown in the photo at right (and when I come in via the garage I walk past them as well, but in passing rather than having […]

Moods of the Mountain #17

This morning’s mountain was half-lit in the morning sun, and the angle of the light has made the Organ Pipes feature quite clear so I’ve enlarged that part of the photo so you can see some of the detail. Most of the mountain is dolerite, an igneous rock which cools slowly enough to create the columns […]

GROIC Day 19

These were sorted out nearly two weeks ago; they get counted today.

Fourteen years’ worth of the Church youth magazines, together with five magazine boxes.

I spent most of today slaving away in the garage, sorting out more piles for elimination. Some of them have even made it to the rubbish bin already, although they won’t be counted […]

Moods of the Mountain #16

Not the most spectacular sunset but still quite pretty at the end of a hot and blustery day.

The full “Moods of the Mountain” collection (with larger versions of the photos) can be […]

Pretend garden

I’ve been here for nearly two years and have done next to nothing with the garden apart from mowing the lawn occasionally and glaring at the bamboo. Actually, I have done more than just glaring, as I have removed some of the new shoots when they’ve reared their ugly heads, but removing the little thicket is […]

GROIC Day 18

Decided to get rid of some piles of old filed bits of personal administration: old bills and the like from my Victorian days. Since they had some personal information on them (for old addresses, mind you) I thought it best to shred them. The shredder had other ideas, and overheated towards the end. Fortunately it got […]
