Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

12. Insanity [100 poems challenge]

12.          Insanity

A calendar with hour-long meetings
Separated by hour-long gaps;
A To Do list that has three things added
For every one that is completed;
A software upgrade
Worse than the previous iteration;
A workplace that wants exponential growth
In a place with static population;
An inbox of 12000 items
2000 of which have not been read;
And a preposterous idea to write
A hundred poems in […]

12 of 12, May 2013

We interrupt our current poetical programming to bring you some photos. Yes, it’s the 12th again.

This time I went for a walk on a nearby hill, for the exercise and to take photos. I’ve only ever been up there once or twice before, and I had forgotten what good views it offered. It was […]

11. Memory [100 poems challenge]

11.          Memory

Just lately my mind has grown hazy,
I’ve taken to making a list;
I don’t want to drive myself crazy
Because there is something I’ve missed.
Whenever I find I’m recalling
A task that just cannot be late
I quickly start typing or scrawling
The job on my list, with a date.
But this is not all that’s disturbing —
This need to write […]

10. Breathe Again [100 poems challenge]

1o.          Breathe Again

Will I? Won’t I?
Can I? Can’t I?
No pressure or nuthin’!
Waiting, waiting
Time slows and hastens.
Pulse pounding
Tension mounting
Braced in readiness
Then
A fleeting eternity
And it’s done.
The pressure fades;
It’s only now I realise
That all along
I’ve been holding my breath.

9. Drive [100 poems challenge]

9.          Drive

Some days the destination is all that matters,
For others the journey itself,
But for most trips it’s both.
It’s a long way there and a long way back
For meetings shorter than the drive
Bringing its necessity into question;
But I go, sometimes alone,
Singing along to favourite tracks,
Harmony my coffee substitute.
Vistas change: the verge a blur,
The further hills move slower
But […]

8. Innocence [100 poems challenge]

8.          Innocence

A dark-haired child,
Relaxed and breathing steadily,
Eyes closed,
Tousled head on the pillow,
Face in repose
Lit softly by the faint hall light
Filtering past the shadow
Watching from the door.

I’m sure my mother knew
I wasn’t really asleep,
And that tucked beneath the blankets
A torch and book awaited her departure
So that I could finish one more chapter,
Maybe two.

7. Heaven [100 poems challenge]

7.          Heaven

Fun with family,
Relaxing with friends,
The sounds of peace,
Rugged alpine views,
A waterfall in rainforest,
Sunset reflections,
Moonlit starry night,
Sweet and fatty foods
With no consequences,
And no bureaucracy.

Comments: The company of good people and beautiful outdoor places would be sufficient for me, I think.

6. Break Away [100 poems challenge]

6.          Break Away

Just another attempt
To get a higher score;
Just another update
Of a trivial status;
Just another mouse-click
And a web page turns to two
Just another email
Lands with a Pavlovian bell;
Just another feeble try
To leave the thing alone.

Comments: Yeah, I’m having issues at the moment: far too easily distracted by certain pieces of technology.

5. Seeking Solace [100 poems challenge]

5.          Seeking Solace

Last night
I cried
Like a child:
Silent sobs
That made me tremble.
I tossed
And turned,
And took deep breaths
To calm me down,
But still I screamed out
Quietly
So as not to wake anyone.

That’s why
Nobody came
To comfort me
And stroke the hair
Beside my ear
Until I fell asleep.

I slept anyway
And the sun rose in the morning
As it always does.

4. Dark [100 poems challenge]

4.          Dark

I know cloudy days
And momentary gloom;
Drifts of foggy haze
Where faint shadows loom;
But I do not know
The advancing grim,
Its relentless flow
As all light grows dim;
When a pitch black wall
Full surrounds the soul
And threatens a fall
Down an endless hole.
Where the brightest light
Shone by caring friend
Is consumed by night
And the world will end.
As this darkest threat
Smothers all […]
