Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

The quantitative vs qualitative debate

There was a Faculty post-graduate research conference held on Saturday, which allowed our students to present aspects of their research to an audience of staff, fellow students, and others. Someone decided it would be a good idea to conclude the conference with a humorous debate, tackling the classic topic about which research methodology is better: qualitative […]

Spam by any other name is still spam

There is a special class of spam reserved especially for academics: the vanity award.

It’s difficult to imagine what these people think I might have done in 2013 to deserve being recognised as one of the Top 100 Educators in 2013, since apparently I have no PhD and they think I am still at my previous workplace […]

Moods of the Mountain #21

Crepuscular rays.

Man, I love that phrase.

(This is using a longer zoom than I have used in the past, but it’s still from the balcony, so it satisfies the rules. My new little camera has both a wider and a longer zoom range than the previous one, which does increase the options for framing photos.)

The full “Moods […]

Taking the Mickey’s Beach turnoff

Mum and I took advantage of the day’s glorious sunshine, and went for a drive down to the Huon, Cygnet and Channel area, partly to revisit old family picnic spots. Randalls Bay* was an intended destination, and having enjoyed a short stroll along its shore I decided to head to nearby Egg and Bacon Bay. On […]

12 of 12, November 2013

Work had me in Launceston this week. I knew 12 of 12 was coming up but somehow I forgot to pack my good little camera (it normally travels with me, but I had removed it from its usual spot for another event). This meant that I had to resort to my iPhone, which doesn’t take particularly […]

Moods of the Mountain #20

And a nice sunset to cheer me up and provide a welcome distraction from the pile of marking that has totally ruined my momentum on the Get-Rid-Of-It Challenge.

The full “Moods of the Mountain” collection can be […]

GROIC2 – the first few

So, the whole GROIC/minimalist’s game thing went well last month, but I hadn’t finished going through all my junk and some friends decided to re-run the event in November. There are quite a few people signed up with us on facebook, all of them making inroads on their clutter.

I decided I wasn’t going to be as […]

GROIC Day 31

And, finally we reach the end of the month.

I have to confess that today’s effort kind of feels like “this is the way the month ends, not with a bang but a whimper” (to misquote T.S. Eliot). I should have kept something spectacular for the last one, but I ran out of time to be quite […]

GROIC Day 30

I don’t really want to post this one, but here it is: the box of guilt and shame.

It contains 30 objects that have been in my possession for far far far too long. I have been meaning to return them to their rightful owner for ages (indeed, they have moved house with me on three occasions, […]

GROIC Day 29

I got this pile ready on the weekend. Well, when I say “got this pile ready” I really mean “took this already existing pile from its place on top of the downstairs chest of drawers where it has been sitting since shortly after I moved and dumped it onto the driveway so it could be […]
