Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Observations of the returned exile

I have now been back in Tasmania for six months. I have made the following observations.

When I left Tasmania in 1999 the state of the economy was all rather doomy-and-gloomy. I believe there was a bit of a boom in the mid-2000s. However, it’s back to doomy-and-gloomy again. I don’t think I am responsible, but there […]

Walk photo 1

I’ve been trying to go for a 2.5km-3km walk on most days, a task I can accomplish in half an hour if I push it (which is, in fact, part of the objective). Fitting the task into my day is sometimes challenging, but I simply need to get more exercise.

I have now decided that I might […]

Voyager 1 leaves the solar system

I heard a report today that suggests the Voyager 1 space probe may have left the solar system. It has been beyond the orbit of Neptune and Pluto since 1988/1989, but, as suggested by this link, it appears that it has now gone past the “heliopause”. Inside this region the solar wind has an effect, but […]

Moods of the Mountain #2

This morning, when the sun finally thought about getting up around 7:30, the view from my balcony revealed a classic Bridgewater Jerry. This time the fog was flowing on top of the Derwent River, restricted between its banks and just high enough to reach the top of the bridge, which meant that from my place the […]

12 of 12, June 2012

I wasn’t sure what theme I was going to work with for this month’s 12 of 12, since it was just a regular day, with meetings and various bits of paper- and computer-based work, which is hardly conducive to fun or interesting photos.

But then I realised that the day might have some views: out windows, on […]

Silver Falls

I’ve been trying to get into the habit of going for a 2.5km or so walk each day, because I am simply not getting enough exercise. Today was a holiday and my plans were to do some work and escape to have a walk. Unfortunately I seemed to hit an attitude problem with work, which wouldn’t […]
