Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Devil’s Throne

For the Monday of the Australia Day long weekend, some of the local geocachers organised a trip to hunt some caches on the top of Mt Wellington. With the weather gorgeous, the terrain alpine, the company good (and useful, since we ventured a little further afield than I might attempt on my Tod), and the objectives […]

More messing about in boats

Our Scout troop’s most recent camp was held on the east coast of Tasmania at Little Swanport, a place I’d never visited let alone explored. We had just a handful of our Scouts together with a couple of their families (it’s summer, and many people had other holiday plans). We were camped at a property not […]

And now for something completely different.

A week or two ago I must have seen or been reminded of one of those old historical sketches documenting some aspect of my local area, and, in wondering what a difference it would have made to the recording of history if cameras had been readily available at the time, it […]

Moods of the Mountain #27

Today was a glorious summer day, but very hazy, and as the afternoon sun plunged towards the horizon, the whole mountain seemed to disappear behind a bright explosion of light. As the sun actually set, the clouds on the mountain face created interesting effects on the summit.

This shot really was taken from my balcony — and […]

Moods of the Mountain #26

Rain-clagged* mountain.

It had just finished pouring with rain at my place when I took this shot. In a typical case of bad timing, I’d picked this evening to use my new barbecue to cook for Sunday family dinner. Fortunately I have a sheltered front porch area, but it wasn’t the al fresco dining affair that I’d […]

That’s better … (GROIC3)

Well, it took me far longer than I wanted, but I now have an office in which I think I can face the year. The office was the subject of a GROIC in December, although it wasn’t until New Year’s Day that I completed the final components for the 1+2+3+…+31 piles, and it wasn’t until today […]

GROIC2 – Yes, I did make it through November

The end of the year was rather busy and so I didn’t get around to reporting on the rest of my second Get-Rid-Of-It Challenge, conducted during November, and a continuation of my house tidying and de-cluttering that I had begun in the first GROIC back in October. My “rules” for the GROIC2 month were to get […]
