Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Moods of the Mountain #44

There was a lovely sunset tonight, as you can see. However, it was still captured with my usual compact digital camera because I hadn’t had a chance to get my new toys out of their boxes (I’ll give you more information about this another time, but I finally got around to getting me my promised-to-myself birthday […]

Multicultural masterchef

I am such a master of multicultural cuisine: I cook bolognese sauce in […]

12 of 12, September 2014

This month’s 12th involved a day trip to Melbourne for an all-day meeting, which, despite the change of scenery, did not actually provide much scenery due to being stuck inside for most of the day.

To make matters worse, it involved a wake-up time that had a 4 in the time’s hour position, which was especially problematic […]

The consequences of taping up some boxes

Nearly five years ago, I spent an evening in Oxford packing some books into boxes as one of my friend Anne’s projects to provide medical texts to under-resourced students in Zimbabwe.

A couple of days ago I had an email from Anne informing me that the coordinating student has now qualified, and, what’s more, is now directing […]

Moods of the Mountain #43

After another week of mild weather, I woke in my cosy house to find an overnight dusting of snow had decorated the top of the mountain.  Before long, the day felt rather chilly.

[RST] Getting our priorities straight: Mary, Martha and us

In last Sunday’s lesson we discussed the story from the New Testament of Jesus’ visit with Mary and Martha, when Mary sat at the Saviour’s feet while Martha was feeling so “cumbered about much serving” that she entreated the Lord to request that Mary help her. When I asked the class who we thought we might […]

Moods of the Mountain #42

I was home a little earlier than usual this afternoon, which meant I could take these two photos from the balcony as the sun was starting set, lighting up the dispersing rain clouds on its way down. I zoomed in on the cloud-embraced glowing hills as well.

[RST] Achieving our glorious potential

Spring is in the air, and winter’s denuded trees are about to burst forth into blossom and leaf. I took this photo of a magnolia bud on my recent wanderings, and it is bursting with potential. In a day or two its beauty will become evident, but for now it remains hidden and unknown. The plant’s […]
