Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Ironic spam comments

I always glance through the spam filter’s collection of comments before deleting. There have been some interesting ironies (and I admit that I have used this sort of spam as fuel for a blog entry before):

Nice post. Waitin’ for a sequel! 🙂
Ironically this was associated with the Lake Waikaremoana Day 4 post, which was followed — […]

Brickbat and bouquet

Recently our postal service changed its approach to postage charges and delivery times, to the point where it now seems that Australia Post may have become a short-term, random-duration parcel and envelope storage facility. It is a complete mystery what they do with the mail in the new system, which involves 2-5 extra days between posting […]

Loyalty cards

Okay, so I managed to find something to dress up in to wear to the annual big university dinner. (It/I actually looked much better in real life than in the photo, if you can trust my judgment about these things (which normally I wouldn’t)).

I was looking for other attire, in fact, when I was browsing in […]

Bad pun 8

This bad pun dates back to 1998, as a result of a very fortuitous circumstance unlikely to happen again. I was in Newfoundland at the time, and had met and become friends with a younger couple at Church, Doug and Helena Jole (they have remained internet friends since that time). Also at Church there was a […]

A dramatically different decision

I happened to be checking through my “Moods of the Mountains” posts this morning, and discovered that I had miscounted them, by accidentally repeating a number in their labelling. What’s more, I had done this twice.

I thought about this for a moment and then … drum roll …

I <gulp> decided not to do anything about it.

I […]

To everything there may be a season …

One of the curses — and blessings — of my personality is that I’ve always been interested in getting involved in a wide variety of stuff, to the extent that I tend to over-commit myself because — to paraphrase Allie Brosh’s famous “Clean all the things” illustration — I […]

The ravages of age and the bionic woman

Six years after first getting hearing aids, I decided I needed to get them adjusted … only to discover that one was pretty close to giving up the ghost and that, of course, the intervening years have seen some advances of technology giving many more audio channels and fancy auto-adjusting programs that alter settings in different […]

The Laws of Stupidynamics

There’s been a bit of it about lately, so, taking my inspiration from the laws of thermodynamics, I present the laws of stupidynamics.

Zeroth Law

If two systems are each as a stupid as a third, then they are as stupid as each other.

First Law

Stupidity is easily created but can only be destroyed by the addition of large […]

Social media communication difficulties

How do I tell everyone that Facebook is down if Facebook is down?

(Oh, think of all the poor people out there, twitching anxiously, unable to post photos of kittens accompanied by badly […]

Not ff enough

The last time I popped my Sky 2 CD into the stereo, opened the album sheet-music to Scipio and treated myself to 12 minutes of sheer unadulterated house-rocking, barn-storming, head-banging (not quite) joyful noise was back in September 2010 when I was living in Melbourne. Since then I have moved, and replaced the stereo.

Tonight, I needed a dose […]
