Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

These WERE a few of my favourite things

One of my (many) pet peeves is the disappearance of things from supermarket shelves. It’s bad enough that things are relocated from time to time (which at least means you may be able to find them again after redrawing your map of the supermarket), or that they change their packaging (which means that they are still […]

Another hike along a different bit of coast

Somehow I ended up with a large number of Scouty things scheduled in rapid succession in April and May, including some hikes. I think part of the rationale was that we hadn’t had a hike for a while, we had some kids who needed them … and we had two leaders who wanted them as well! […]

Time is an illusion

The timekeepers in my life are rather erratic. My computer and my iPhone have the same time as each other and come closest to matching the ABC time pips. My other horological devices are more varied. The video recorder is still running on daylight savings time and so is an hour ahead. My bike trip computer […]

Slothing around in uggies

Last week was a l-o-o-o-ng week.

There was all that marking (I just managed to get things finalised before my deadline … give or take a bit), there were meetings and classes and emails and other work-related things (the usual litany, but it just felt denser this week), there was Scouts* on Thursday night (with first aid […]

12 of 12, May 2010

A looooong day, mostly filled with marking. I have a love-hate relationship with assignments: it’s always interesting to see what students are thinking, but the sheer volume of assignments to be marked quickly palls.

I can’t work out to what extent I am responsible for the fact that there seemed to be a few more problems than […]

Excuses, excuses

Despite my vow to ride my bike regularly upon my return from the UK (see this post) I have been less than conscientious in this matter. This is because

I have had late nights teaching
I have been giving lifts home to a friend
It’s been raining
I’ve had to carry big piles of marking
The clip on one of my […]

Catch-22

I have discovered why I have such difficulty delegating jobs to others.

You see, I feel I can only delegate jobs that I am willing to do myself.

Of course, there is only one way to be certain that I am genuinely willing to do such jobs […]
