Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Excuses, excuses

Despite my vow to ride my bike regularly upon my return from the UK (see this post) I have been less than conscientious in this matter. This is because

  • I have had late nights teaching
  • I have been giving lifts home to a friend
  • It’s been raining
  • I’ve had to carry big piles of marking
  • The clip on one of my panniers is broken
  • There’s been a big box of professional development resources to carry
  • I’ve been in a hurry
  • I’m tired

They’re not very good excuses, are they? Nearly all of them have been over-ruled in the past. (Well, apart from the “lift for a friend” … since I can’t quite see “dinking” being successful given how much the poor bike already carries—what with a computer, change of clothes, work stuff, small piles of marking, etc).

I guess it just comes down to

  • I’m pathetic

    You are not pathetic…
You just need an xtracycle with lights…
    check them out…http://www.xtracycle.com/
you’d be able to carry everything, AND your friend…

I can’t go anywhere unless I ride at the moment (usually towing 2 small girls)… and I’d really like one of these bikes… can you tell?

Having just come back from 2 days in Melbourne (effects of a day’s workshop on statistics eventually ameliorated by lots of shopping, the Rupert Bunny exhibition and some yummy food)I think anyone trying to ride a bike in Melb traffic must be totally mad! And that’s without the trams! So ‘an admirable sense of self-preservation’ should be your complete excuse.
