Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Midlands 2015-#7N

And a week that was already mad experienced another spanner.

I turned up at 7:40am to collect a university car for a trip to Launceston, only to discover that the booked car wouldn’t start. I feared it may just have been my lack of familiarity with the vehicle (except that I have driven a similar model before), […]

A dinner with friends

It has been a tough and exhausting week for various reasons too lengthy to elaborate here (but largely associated with the fact that the UTas maths education team were hosting an annual international conference and there were a few complications).

However, there have been positives as well. One of the good things about the conference was catching […]

It had to happen eventually.

I’m sure everyone has moments where you want to turn back time so that you can repeat a day and do it differently.

And not even spectacularly differently; this time all I’d change is taking a few photos every now and then.

Yes, for the first time in nearly 6 years I don’t have […]

Maria Island Scout hike, day 3

Next morning the kids managed to get themselves away on time, as the sun rose over Mt Maria. The weather was strange on the way back: patches of sunshine, and fleeting showers just heavy enough to demand the wearing of rainjackets.

Everybody on.

Everybody off.

I just had time to whip out the camera to catch a pair of […]

Maria Island Scout hike, day 2

After the usual less-than-continuous first night’s sleep, it was nice to wake to a dry though overcast day. I took a few more photos around the wool shed at Frenchs Farm.

I then popped around to Encampment Cove again to finalise a few arrangements with the others, and the patrol that had camped there were soon on […]

Maria Island Scout hike, day 1

It has been 12 years since I have been back to one of my favourite places on the planet, Maria Island, and the first time I’ve been there since I started using digital photography, with the liberating capacity to take as many photos as I want.

This trip was a Scout hike—well, two hikes in fact—with four […]
