Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

A gentle stroll

The weather hasn’t been particularly fantastic over the Christmas/New Year period, which has reduced the incentive to get out into the wilds, although it has been good for getting various other odds and ends done. However, with the forecast for the day of New Year’s Eve being tolerable, I suggested a trip up to Russell Falls […]

Moods of the Mountain #25

Shortly after I woke this morning the mountain was half-covered in misty cloud, and the morning sun was casting a couple of rainbows.

I want … a shrubbery

My place has a very long driveway, with a narrow border between the fence and the concrete. Until a couple of days ago this had been a rocky-bottomed skinny ditch, that, left unattended, would fill with weeds. As a welcoming garden, this was clearly unacceptable.

There was only one solution:

“I want … a … shrubbery”*

So, after months […]

Moods of the Mountain #24

It was a glorious Christmas day today, blue sky and sunshine, accompanied by family and good food.

And then there was a nice sunset at the end.

Stealth Ninja Santas

It’s nearly Christmas, and therefore time for the annual Secret Santa Cookie Drop Run. This year’s exercise in advanced sneaking and delivering  techniques involved one of the nephews from last year’s run together with his next-down sister, who was experiencing her first secret Christmas stealth manoeuvres. My Mum (their grandma) had done all the baking in […]

Happy Christmas 2013

Oooh, dear, I’m running late.

Here it is, December 22, and what with one thing and another I’ve been way behind getting this year’s Christmas cards into the mail. I did prioritise the overseas ones, and so I hope that they’ll all arrive on time.

For this year’s design I’d hoped to learn more about using Illustrator, but […]

Evening light in the Gorge

I’m in Launceston for a couple of days for work (a trip I’ve made regularly these past few weeks). This evening I managed an early enough dinner that I still had time for a longish walk while it was still daylight. I decided to head up Cataract Gorge, and although the sun was mostly behind the […]

Moods of the Mountain #23

Different moods from a couple of days during the past week. The first, on the 15th, shows the sun setting directly over the mountain at around 8:30pm (we’re about a week away from the longest day); and the second, from the 17th, shows some interesting cloud formations above and in front of the mountain at 7:30 […]

12 of 12, December 2013

I lacked inspiration today, and it was an uneventful day as well.

So, I decided to see what effects I could find/create with my new little camera, particularly using the macro setting. There is — not surprisingly, since it is December after all — a Christmas flavour to some of the photos.

The collection of photos can be […]

Moods of the Mountain #22

These photos bookend the first day of summer. The first, at 6:20am, captures a Bridgewater Jerry-type mist, running along the face of the mountain. The second, at 8:10pm, shows sunlit clouds after sundown, stretched out across the sky.
