Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

[RST] Some things we can’t do alone

On Saturday I took my triplet nieces and nephew for a bit of an adventure on a pedal-powered railway bogie along the old train line at National Park. This was fine as an idea, until it became apparent that I was going to be the main source of horsepower for the 120kg contraption plus three 8-year-olds […]

Social media communication difficulties

How do I tell everyone that Facebook is down if Facebook is down?

(Oh, think of all the poor people out there, twitching anxiously, unable to post photos of kittens accompanied by badly […]

Not exactly a summery set of strolls

With today being a holiday, and my reading of the weather forecast suggesting a cool but promising day, my brother and two of his older children joined me for a trip down to the Hartz area. As we travelled southward, the weather gave plenty of hints that it was going to make a liar of the […]

And a lovely early evening too

Having off-loaded the triplets I was going to head home for tea, but the day was still especially lovely, so I called in on Mum and Dad and suggested we get fish and chips for tea and go eat them somewhere nice. We ended up down at Mortimer Bay (fortunately the food was still warm by […]

Travels with triplets

Some days I feel as if I am a bad aunty; today probably was not one of those days.

When I moved back to Tasmania three years ago I had intentions of frequent sleep-overs and excursions with various family members, but although I have managed such from time to time, they have occurred nowhere near as often […]

This week has been a good week for sunsets. Here […]

Moods of the Mountain #56

I was going to apologise for flooding the blog with moods of the mountain posts (and with multiple shots within each post), but I hope you’ll understand why I don’t feel the need to: it really was a rather spectacular sunset tonight.

One of these days I really must do a time-lapse sequence.

Moods of the Mountain #55

It was a warm day and there were some interesting cloud structures over the summit as the just-set sun lit them up.

Changing of the birds

Yesterday morning a distant and then closer examination of the nest revealed that the blackbirds have flown the nest. I was a bit worried about this at first, because on Monday I went against my decision to stay back for the last stages and had approached the nest closely again … and one of the fledglings […]

Really rather large little things

I managed to get this shot of mother blackbird this morning; she is perched motionless on the edge of the nest very aware of my presence. You can see one of her charges very clearly, with hints of the other two as well. I was quite happy to see them all when I got up, as […]
