Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

45. Illusion [100 poems challenge]

45.          Illusion

I start this simple verse just so
It seems the thing that I should do,
But I must state a caveat:
You’ll find this poem quite offbeat.
I’ll write of pure-bred Jersey cows
Bedecked in multi-coloured bows,
Fox-trotting while a bonny lass
Plays tunes upon a double bass
And someone taps a castanet
Atop a massive trebuchet.
A giant gentle dancing bear
Will dance with you […]

44. Two Roads [100 poems challenge]

44.          Two Roads

There’s mud and grime from my toes to knees,
Arms are scratched and my trousers torn
My hand is sore from the stings of bees,
Last place I stopped was rife with fleas
And now I just wish I wasn’t born.

My blistered heels are a bloody mess,
Ribs are bruised where I slipped and fell,
And where I am is […]

43. Dying [100 poems challenge]

43.          Dying

I’ve hearing aids behind my ears,
My knees have trouble bending,
My mem’ry sometimes disappears,
Close focus is extending.
My energy is somewhat drained,
There’s stiffness in my shoulder,
I cannot lose the weight I’ve gained,
I know I’m getting older.
I notice almost every day—
There’s really no denying—
My hair abounds with strands of grey,
And so, right now, I’m dyeing.

12 of 12, June 2013

Lunch today interrupted some meanderings on the east coast of Tasmania, with the meanderings documented in this month’s 12 of 12 collection. Lunch, on the other hand, is documented here so as not to interrupt the generally scenic mood of the rest of the day’s photos. I’m not sure that this photo does justice to how […]

42. Standing Still [100 poems challenge]

42.          Standing Still

The tourists seem to think it’s grand
To photograph it in their hand,
Despite the fact that it’s a clichéd thrill;
While Galileo chose to throw
Two masses (so the stories go)
To see which one was first to reach the ground.
Now mighty work from engineers
Has gone some way to counter fears
That one day it would surely topple down.
Despite […]

A day out of the box

Today was a good day; the partial proof of which is that I took nearly 200 photos (not all of them good photos, mind you, but all of them of things worth trying to photograph).

It began with sunrise. One of the good things about winter is that sunrise doesn’t happen until after 7:30, which is a […]

41. Teamwork [100 poems challenge]

41.          Teamwork

Load anchor, and bailers, and fenders, and mast,
And don’t forget gaff and the boom,
The spinnaker helps if you want to go fast,
The jib and two oars take up room.

When all the gear’s loaded aboard, my lads,
Sing “Haul, Scouts, haul”
We’ll launch with the help of the mums and dads
Sing “Haul, Scouts, haul”.

A trailer downhill has a […]

Pottering around Coles Bay

I decided to take a couple of days of leave from work, add them to the long weekend, and drag my parents away to Coles Bay for a bit of a break. We arrived late on Sunday afternoon, which meant that on Monday morning we were already in our comfortable accommodation — with its wonderful view […]

40. Rated [100 poems challenge]

40.          Rated

It’s been long past a month, and here we are
With forty verses, all matched to their themes,
The best aren’t bad, but some are under par;
And not all follow perfect rhyming schemes.
I’ve done haiku, which comes from far Japan,
And double dactyl’s fun but quite contrived,
A limerick was always in the plan,
The ballad somehow started and survived.
There’s […]

39. Dreams [100 poems challenge]

39.          Dreams

Our dreams don’t always
Turn out how we expect, which
May be just as well.

Comments: Another haiku. I find this form an easy one to construct (I even have a geocache that uses a cunningly constructed haiku to give the coordinates, although there were some additional constraints for that one that made it […]
