40. Rated
It’s been long past a month, and here we are
With forty verses, all matched to their themes,
The best aren’t bad, but some are under par;
And not all follow perfect rhyming schemes.
I’ve done haiku, which comes from far Japan,
And double dactyl’s fun but quite contrived,
A limerick was always in the plan,
The ballad somehow started and survived.
There’s prose set out in stanzas so you’ll think
It’s poetry (I’m sure there’s some who doubt).
Today I have the rhythm kept in sync
With five iambic beats all counted out.
So now, come poem’s end, I hope you’ll tell
If this poor sonnet form has rated well.

Comments: “Rated” isn’t a word I use very much, and certainly not in a poetic way. So, for irony’s sake, I managed to throw it into a metapoem, in sonnet form no less. I hadn’t decided which of the themes was going to get “the” sonnet, but I certainly hadn’t expected it to be this one. There may be another sonnet before we reach the 100th poem.
Themes to come: 41. Teamwork; 42. Standing Still; 43. Dying; 44. Two Roads; 45. Illusion
