Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Family at Christmas, 2018

It was nice at Christmas time to have the whole family around, with my younger brother and his family visiting from New Zealand. We got together at my aunt’s house on Christmas Day, in accordance with family tradition, and a good day was had by all, with food, fun, water fights, photographs, and a visit from […]

Another drive with the APs

Circumstances had curtailed my earlier-in-the-year plans to take my APs on a trip away, but I still had plenty of accumulated leave … just no capacity to actually take some of it in a nice big block. However, I could arrange to escape for a day, and so I duly did, and took my folks for […]

Putangirua Pinnacles

A bit of a drive to the south-east of Wellington takes you beyond Lake Ferry and to the start of a track to the Putangirua Pinnacles.

We took the scenic route, which involved a lovely walk through the bush before reaching a lookout that gave us an overview of this amazing geomorphological feature. The conglomerate rock has […]

Matariki 2018

With one of my mid-year conferences occurring in New Zealand, it seemed like a good opportunity to visit whanau/family in Wellington and so I took a detour to see my brother and sister-in-law and their children for a couple of days. After visiting Te Papa (the museum on the waterfront) I went for a walk from […]

Randalls Bay with the APs

I think I’ve used the term “APs” in this blog a few times but have not explained it. In Dickens’ Great Expectations the character Wemmick takes care of his elderly father, whom he refers to as “Aged Parent” or, more frequently, Aged P. It is but a short abbreviating step from this to “AP”, and then easy […]

Adamsons Falls

A different niece; a different destination.

The Australia Day holiday gave me an opportunity for a day walk with my eldest well-and-truly adult niece. We’d originally thought about climbing Adamsons Peak (apostrophe in “Adamsons” not included due to official nomenclature board policy), but timing, weather and some other factors, such as a strong disdain for extended upwardnesses, meant […]

A niece’s first overnight hike

The summer holidays seemed like a good time to introduce my 14-year-old niece, B, to overnight hiking. There’s an ideal spot down on the Tasman Peninsula which we sometimes use with Scouts: great scenery, mostly level track with enough hilly bits to help you learn to cope with them, not too long, and with fresh water […]

A Bushwalker’s Prayer

I wrote this poem back in August 1990, but it came to my brother’s attention a day or two ago via a time capsule (long story). He set the poem with one of his amazing photos of Russell Falls. We both have a soft […]

Another Waterworks 50th

My Aunty Mari and Uncle David (my Mum’s sister and brother-in-law) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this week, and had a gathering of friends and family at the Waterworks. The weather was cool but good for winter (and certainly better than the forecast), and a very enjoyable time was had by all. Most of my people […]

Hartz a-pumping

Today was one of those glorious days where the sun shines, the view is spectacular, the company is good, you don’t die on the uphill bits, and enough of your photos turn out.

I took two of my older nieces to Hartz Peak today, where the altitude and breeze were enough to attenuate the very warm summer […]
