Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

12 of 12, January 2016

Once every month the 12th comes around; once every three years the Australian Scout Jamboree comes around. I’ll give a bit more detail about my whole Jamboree experience in the next blog entry, but for now here is an account in 12 photos of the activities of the 12th.

It began fairly early; most mornings I was […]

One of the reasons

There are many reasons why I keep Scout leading. This is one of them. [“Chippy” is my […]

Night magic

Look, the photos are lousy to the point that I really shouldn’t bother posting them but tonight was kind of magical. It was a Scout night, and we were doing stuff outside, and there was some cloud about, but one of the biggest aurorae that I have ever seen decided to “go off” and it was […]

Maria Island Scout hike, day 2

After the usual less-than-continuous first night’s sleep, it was nice to wake to a dry though overcast day. I took a few more photos around the wool shed at Frenchs Farm.

I then popped around to Encampment Cove again to finalise a few arrangements with the others, and the patrol that had camped there were soon on […]

Maria Island Scout hike, day 1

It has been 12 years since I have been back to one of my favourite places on the planet, Maria Island, and the first time I’ve been there since I started using digital photography, with the liberating capacity to take as many photos as I want.

This trip was a Scout hike—well, two hikes in fact—with four […]

A Wood Badge for the next generation

When I started at 17th Essendon Scouts, not long after I moved to Melbourne in 1999, there was a young Scout in the troop named Matthew Cengia. Some three years later he was among the first Scouts with whom I had had significant interaction to achieve the highest award in the Scout age group (what was […]

Scouting about in boats

The March long weekend brings Tasmania’s annual Scout Guide Regatta, held down at Snug with around 800 kids and leaders. Despite a variable forecast the weather was really quite delightful for the whole three days, providing an added incentive to get out on — and in — the water.

On the first night we took advantage of […]

Unseasonable summer camp

Tasmania’s weather is notoriously variable, but having a full week of drizzle, wind, and coolth in the middle of summer is definitely unseasonable. And to have such a week coinciding with our annual Scout troop summer camp had the potential to be disappointing but we managed to have a good time despite it.

It was cool all […]

Cycling and walking in the mist

December is probably too busy a time of year for Scout hikes, which may explain the low numbers for our cycling and walking trip to Wellington Falls, but neither this, nor the less than clement weather, prevented us from having an enjoyable day of it. We cycled along the Pipeline Track from Neika, with the irrepressible […]

Cardboard box sleepout mk.2

Two years ago our Scout troop had a cardboard box sleepout in my front yard, and the kids wanted to do it again this year. The boxes were assembled on our regular meeting night, helped this year by the fact that one of the parents had managed to find some really big boxes that were large […]
