Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

12 of 12, March 2018

As promised a year ago, the 12 of 12 for March this year fell on the final day of the annual Scout regatta. It’s an in-tents occasion.

I had been carefully monitoring how well I was feeling during the week after surgery and leading up to this, and although I still felt a bit tired, I thought […]

Cape Pillar revisited and 12 of 12, February 2018

Due to an unexpected twist in my life (which may get explained here when I have decided how I want to do it), a Scout hike that had been a bit up in the air very suddenly had to become real for southern Tasmania’s February long weekend. A frantic planning meeting was held with the two […]

Cooking camp

It’s always crazy trying to get organised for Scout camps, in amongst the chaos of other everyday commitments, but once I get there I find them quite restorative (especially if the weather is good, and you can pack the tents away dry!).

This weekend we took over 20 of our kids to camp (there were some comings […]

Mt Charlie ghosts

A trip to Melbourne for a conference allowed me to plan an extra day doing a little maintenance on some of my Victorian caches. The most problematic one — in terms of damage and distance to travel to get to it — was on Mt Charlie, about 50 minutes north of Melbourne, not far from a […]

A damp hike … and a small milestone

I was hoping for some nice weather on the occasion of this particular Scout hike, in part to celebrate the eighth anniversary of this blog, and in part because I hate dealing with wet gear after a hike! Instead we had a lightly damp Saturday, an overnight downpour, and rain off and on during Sunday morning. […]

Easter bike hike

One of our older Scouts decided that, instead of doing the usual bush-walk for his Adventurer/green cord journey, he would do a three-day bike hike. It has been nearly 10 years since my last multi-day Scout bike trip, and the best part of a year since doing any cycling at all, so I had to brush […]

12 of 12, February 2017

It’s the 12th again, and this month I was on the second day of a Scout hike on Freycinet Peninsula. By the time I remembered it was 12 of 12 I had emptied the tent, although I hadn’t yet started to take it down.

The Scouts had planned to be underway by 8:15; I was not surprised […]

Scouts, smoke and seascapes

For a semester that was supposed to be a quiet one, this first half of the year has been more hectic than I’d hoped, and while the idea of a Scout camp this weekend was very appealing, it was a bit of a struggle to actually get there (and, in fact, I wasn’t able to head […]

12 of 12, March 2016

For this month, the 12th coincided with the official opening day of the annual Scout Guide Regatta, a 3 day event full of rowing, kayaking, sailing and other water-related activities, held down at Snug.

This is the fifth regatta that I’ve attended and we camp on the football oval, ending up in pretty much the same position […]

Scout Jamboree, AJ2016

As mentioned in this month’s 12 of 12, the beginning of 2016 brought with it the triennial Australian Scout Jamboree, back at Cataract Park in NSW again as it had been in 2010 (whereas three years ago it was in Queensland). With the Jamboree being around 12 days long, and with the Tasmanian contingent staying on […]
