Christmas Card History 1995 - 2004

(I took photos of the cards using my small digital camera, without taking a great deal of care over lighting and the "bowing" distortions
associated with using a wide angled lens. Colour accuracy is likely to be a bit suspect, too.)

1995

Media: Linocut.

Production method: Printed using one of Dad's printing presses; silver ink onto steel blue card then mounted on off-white card.

Other notes: Nil.

1996

Media: Felt-tip pen on paper.

Production method: Photocopying on green paper.

Other notes: Nil.

1997

Media: White conte on black card.

Production method: Photocopying on heavy "parchment" paper.

Other notes: Nil.

1998

Media: Linocut with a great deal of touching up using black pen.

Production method: Professionally printed in Newfoundland on white card.

Other notes: This is another of my favourite designs, and reflects the fact that I was on sabbatical in Newfoundland at the time. I tried to print the linocuts by hand, but had no press and the results were terrible. In the end I took the best print, fixed the defects with felt-tip pen and paid a printer to print them conventionally.

1999

Media: Whiteout pen on black card with white conte highlights.

Production method: Profesionally printed.

Other notes: This design reflects the fact that I moved to Melbourne at the beginning of 1999. I wanted to juxtapose the peace of the stable with the noisy city but I think the design ends up being a bit too busy.

2000

Media: Black conte on white card.

Production method: Professionally printed onto cream card.

Other notes: Unfortunately some of the detail of the sheep and shepherds is lost due to the lack of contrast (and it's not clear whether the shepherds saw the star anyway).

2001

Media: Pastel on white card, scanned and then digitally treated to create an impressionist effect.

Production method: Home inkjet printer on white card.

Other notes: The first of the computer-facilitated cards. My plan was just to scan the original artwork, but I was not happy with the style (I'd tried to do all the shading diagonally and it just didn't work). However, I ran it through a pointillism filter and adjusted the point size until it looked okay. I was then pleased to discover that the cost of using my home printer — even with the price of inkjet cartridges — was cheaper than professional printing.

2002

Media: Pastel on black card, then scanned for printing.

Production method: Home inkjet printer on white card.

Other notes: Nil.

2003

Media: Pastels and black felt-tip pen, then scanned for printing.

Production method: Home inkjet printer on white card.

Other notes: Nil.

2004

Media: Pastel on black card, then scanned for printing.

Production method: Home inkjet printer on white card.

Other notes: This is another of the designs that I particularly like.
