A friend had suggested that — with the mountain being one of my favourite places — I should make time to visit it on the occasion of this year’s particularly auspicious natal anniversary. I didn’t really have time, and the weather wasn’t particularly promising, but I headed up in the late afternoon while mist and cloud still hung lingered over the summit and remnant snow drifts explained why it had felt so cold today.
Here are some photos. The first shot shows the summit itself, viewed from my car window since it was 1°C outside and blowing a gale. There were a few tourists about, braving the elements … but only a few!
Ice-encrusted guide post.
Rocks, snow (well, ice) and shrubs in the mist near the summit.
Snow gums and dolerite boulder field in the mist, with a few patches of snow.
Looking toward the Lost World from the near the Chalet (I ventured out of the car here; it was about 2°C!).
View of the northern suburbs and Derwent River upstream of Hobart. There was a bronze tinge to the mirrored water which isn’t entirely evident in this shot.
