Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Bruny Island bike hike

Two of our older Scouts planned a three day bike hike on Bruny Island. I had originally planned to attend the whole thing, but a bunch of other commitments needed my attention and so I only made it to the first day. I supplied the support vehicle and so boarded the ferry first, and was able to get this shot of the six kids and the support parent coming aboard.

The support parent cycled out in front, while I followed behind in the car (with flashing lights and a large sign indicating that there were cyclists ahead). There were a few nervous moments on the narrow roads, with the kids sometimes running out of oomph and stopping at less than ideal places.

At lunchtime the support parent and I swapped roles and I got to cycle ahead (which is, in fact, where I was in the photo above), and our next big stop was the isthmus where we climbed to the top of the hill and enjoyed the view.

We then pushed southward, stopping for a brief break at the Alonnah/Adventure Bay junction.

The kids were glad to arrive at Adventure Bay and were pretty efficient at setting up their campsite. One of the other leaders then arrived to take over supervisory duties and I headed back off the island in my car, having cycled 23 or so kilometres. Over the following couple of days the kids managed the massive hill between Adventure Bay and Alonnah, before spending the night at Alonnah, and then returned to the ferry on day 3, having completed over 9o km in all.
