Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

12 of 12, June 2017

This month’s 12th fell on the Monday of the long weekend, and, for a variety of reasons (not the least of which was the fact that I had spent the morning reading a not-totally-rivetting literature review chapter), I felt the need to get out for a walk on Mt Wellington. I decided to pick an approximate area and see if there was a nearby cache, which resulted in me trying to figure out how to solve a puzzle cache, which, when I solved it, resulted in me realising I would need to be walking in a slightly different area from the one I intended, which, I decided, was okay. I called up Dad to invite him to join me on the walk, and he solved the puzzle as we drove to our starting point.

At this time of the year, at this time of day, on this particular part of Mt Wellington, the northerly sun gets hidden by Mt Wellington itself, so I missed out on some nice light effects. Instead, we experienced a soft, dull light filtering through the trees, necessitating a steady hand for some longer-than-expected exposures.

I love the bark on these eucalyptus trees.

More paths. I nearly decided to do the whole 12 of 12 by taking 12 walking track shots!

Little things growing on a mossy log.

Wet moss, illuminated by the camera’s flash.

A rocky overhang as we made our way between one cache and a second one I’d decided to find.

There were quite a few toadstools around (but the gloom meant that I needed to use the flash again).

On this bit of track there is a non-trivial chance of being run over by mountain bikers.

The other side of the river was still getting some of our lost sunlight.

Having found the second cache we turned around and headed back to the car.

Not my best set of photos, I admit, but it was an enjoyable afternoon’s walk, with two cache smileys as well … and full credit to my octogenarian Dad who can still maintain a pretty good pace on this sort of terrain.

[The “12 of 12” project involves taking 12 photos on the 12th of the month. This provides the opportunity to get snapshots of different aspects of your life, from the mundane to the fundane. I have been doing this since 2009; this is the 94th 12 of 12.]
