I was mowing the lawn a week or so ago and noticed a bird’s nest in one of my trees, with a blackbird sitting on it so still I thought it was actually dead. Despite the fact that I mowed right up close to the tree, with my head less than 50cm away, she didn’t budge. I’ve checked on her a few times since, first observing a change in position that confirmed that she hadn’t shuffled off her mortal coil, and then yesterday there was a brief moment when she left the nest and then returned and seemed to be feeding. Today when I arrived home she wasn’t there so I poked my camera over the edge (the nest is just above head height) and confirmed the existence of four rather scrawny bags of skin, bone, beaks and eyeballs.
