Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

ifThis weekend I attended the District’s annual competition camp, held at a farming property about half an hour from our Scout hall. We just had one small patrol competing (lots of conflicting events this weekend) but they made a good team and came equal second.

It’s been interesting over the past couple of years comparing the differences between the two district competition camps with which I am familiar, here in Tassie and back in Victoria. The dining shelters here are constructed affairs, rather than the more prefab kit thingies that we had in Victoria. The kids here do bases assessing basic skills and the assessment is perhaps a little more formal (although possibly just as contentious!). Their meals are assessed, but I miss being invited to dine with a patrol like we used to do in Victoria. However, in both places there was a nice camaraderie among the leaders from each district … and there were great kids doing some pretty terrific jobs working as teams and developing skills and friendships.

Anyway, it was the 12th, and so here are this month’s photos.

Thought just occurred?…..Would have been a great opportunity for your camp to raid theirs, in the dark!

They were all very well behaved (which is appropriate on a competition camp … and, in fact, “raids” are probably only rarely appropriate in my opinion because kids aren’t always good at deciding what is genuinely funny and what goes beyond mere good-humoured mischief)
