Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

ifAnd now for something completely different.

A week or two ago I must have seen or been reminded of one of those old historical sketches documenting some aspect of my local area, and, in wondering what a difference it would have made to the recording of history if cameras had been readily available at the time, it suddenly occurred to me to wonder what 12 of 12 would have looked like back then. Just think how much more would have been recorded for posterity if the ship’s artist or the town painter had done more than just their official duties, and produced sets of 12 rather more random or mundane works on the 12th of every month. We might have gained a better insight in to the everyday life and times of our forebears, although no doubt there would even have been the odd selfie, and sketches of “what I’m having for lunch today” as well!

And then an even more absurd thought occurred to me: why don’t I do this month’s 12 of 12 the old fashioned way?!

So, I located my bits of art equipment and set myself to doing twelve 12 of 12-ish artworks to capture aspects of my day and life. Of course, I’m not spectacularly talented in an artistic way (I’m not ashamed to put these on display, but none of them are much more than tolerable resemblances to the things they are meant to depict), and it’s time-consuming to produce something that’s really good and with 12 images in one day you’re going to have to rush (I didn’t time how long any of them took, but I’d say between 10 and 25 minutes each, and they were all done today), and I haven’t taken any great care in digitising them so they can be posted online.

Next month it will be back to photos again, but, for this month, here are my 12 artworks du jour. By the way, this one day has more than quadrupled my usual average annual artwork output.

(The “12 of 12” project involves taking 12 photos on the 12th of the month … although I seem to have allowed other visual media this time! This provides the opportunity to get snapshots of different aspects of your life. I have been doing this for over four years; this current collection is the 53rd “12 of 12”.)
