Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

66. Traps [100 poems challenge]

66.          Traps

Friends Piglet and Pooh,
Wanting something to do,
Made plans to pursue
A Heffalump, so they could see one;
They decided to sit
And, after a bit,
A Very Deep Pit
Seemed perfect for getting the job done.
They dug their big hole
And hoped to cajole
While out on its stroll
The Heffalump to go a-falling.
They thought that a pot
Of honey they’d got
Would soon make the spot
Attractive to Heffalumps calling.
But during the night
Pooh’s tummy felt tight
He wanted a bite—
A smackerel—so out he headed;
The pit he refound,
Last honey he downed
And then, while he frowned,
His head in the pot got embedded.
When Piglet came by—
At heart, somewhat shy,
But determined to try
To show a brave face despite shaking—
But what a surprise
There greeted his eyes,
Evoking loud cries
And a panicky run quickly making.
With barely a thought
A refuge he sought
So help could be brought
And Christopher R really hurried.
A hop, skip and jump,
Pooh’s jar got a bump
He’s no “Heffalump”—
Poor Piglet then blushed that he’d worried.

Comments: The last six lines were really frustrating. A. A. Milne I am not. This poem is based on Chapter 5 “In which Piglet meets a Heffalump” from Winnie-the-Pooh. I’d enjoyed these stories as a young child, but then Mum gave me a copy when I was an adult and, since I was living at home at the time while at uni, proceeded to read them aloud to me again as bed-time stories. 🙂

Themes to come: 67. Playing the Melody; 68. Hero; 69. Annoyance; 70. 67%; 71. Obsession
