56. Danger Ahead
I cautiously move
Quite anxious to prove
That I can progress without fear;
Horizon is scanned,
Each step fully planned,
Deciphering sounds that I hear.
I quietly pause
To work out the cause
Of movement seen off to one side;
A deep sense of doom
From shadows that loom,
I cannot tell what they might hide.
I glance left and right
As dusk turns to night,
Yet still I don’t know what I’ll find;
Alert to the dread
Of danger ahead …
But heedless of monsters behind.

Comments: This took me a few days before an idea came, but I’m reasonably happy with it apart from the fact that I haven’t really been able to convey the idea that the protagonist was only looking ahead and not behind.
