32. Night
I face skyward,
Earth cold against my back,
While infinity wheels above my head;
Distant suns and unseen worlds,
Far galaxies and the nearer moon,
Arcing across the dark emptiness
Filled with stars yet void.
Satellites trail rapidly,
Glinting in the light
Of the long-set sun;
Planets glow steadily,
Upstaged by the fleeting flash
Of a meteor self-destructing.
Knowns and unknowns,
Luminous and illuminating.
Night’s wonder and mystery.
I face skyward,
Earth cold against my back,
While infinity wheels above my head.

Comments: Gazing at the night sky, especially in the company of friends and/or on camps/hikes is a magical wonderful thing. It’s a pity the ground is usually so cold, though!
