3. Light
I dreamt I flew last night:
A featherweight
Drifting on zephyr breezes;
Catching a thermal,
Defying gravity’s downward thrust;
A gossamer phantom
Insubstantial and free.
But when I stood on the scales this morning
I was just as heavy as ever.

Comments: I decided not to work with the first meaning of “light” that popped into my head but made a conscious choice to do something that wasn’t “obvious” to me (I have no idea about your first thoughts about “light”). This is what I think of as a “punch-line poem”, where the build up takes the reader in a certain direction, and then the ending takes a moderately abrupt left turn. The first poem in this collection—Introduction—did this, and, now that I think about it, so did the second. Hmmm, I see a trend happening here! And as for the result from the scales, yes, it would be good if I could shift a kg or two.
