Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Summer’s last hurrah

Given the duration and warmth of this year’s summer, this post’s heading may be a little premature. That said, however, today was one of those glorious balmy late summer/early autumn days, and given that daylight saving time ends in less than a fortnight (and with autumn equinox already passed) the evenings are getting shorter, and soon will be dark at 6pm.

So today, with both warmth and light still lingering at around 6:15pm, I managed to squeeze in an early evening walk around the point at Anzac Park, and enjoyed some beautiful views across the river to the mountain and the bridge. Unfortunately the iPhone has not done them justice.

The iPhone may not do it justice but the pictures look glorious none the less. The view down the Maribyrnong from the top of Afton St Conservation Park today just do not compare to that view!

As Melbourne views go, that view from the top of Afton St (or also up near Lily St) is actually quite nice. (But you’re right: it doesn’t compare* at all!)

      * Actually it can be compared, it’s just that this expression has come to mean one is ever so much better than the other. 🙂

It is a nice view, but it is one I had yesterday that was quickly followed by me stepping less than a foot from the head of a Brown Snake. Only realised it was there at the last second!

We don’t have brown snakes. In fact we only have three species of snake … but they’re all poisonous, which makes life nice and simple.

So, what did you do once you heart stopped racing?!

  • David

    It still hasn’t!
I made it my mission to tell everyone the story of how I suavely panicked.
