We were all up, breakfasted and ready to go at 8am, as the whole group of us had decided to retrace yesterday’s journey across to Hidden Bay. Despite being familiar with the route we really weren’t all that much quicker, but it’s a route with lots of variety: rainforest up, ridge top open walking, rainforest down, the three roller-coaster hills on the side of the valley, the last bit of forest and then down the dune gully and onto the beach.
While five chose to go no further, the rest of us headed up onto the next range towards Ketchem Bay. This was an amazing range and ridge walk, out in the open with narrow gullies and exposed rock outcrops and good views of the southern coastline.
We had lunch where we could see Ketchem Bay (shown in the page of extra photos) but decided to save time and energy by choosing not to make the last dramatic descent. Our decision to return proved wise as the weather took a bit of a turn for the worse with strong winds and squally showers. Fortunately the weather was neither too wet nor too sustained as we completed the return strenuous 7km back to our campsite.
When we returned I spent quite a while taking photographs as the light did interesting things over the bay (check out the page of extra photos). The success or otherwise of the shots is kind of irrelevant (although there were some nice ones, in my opinion), because I was just enjoying myself taking them. Dinner was also welcome after the day’s exertions, although in my case the main advantage was that it weighed a lot, so at least I won’t have to carry it tomorrow!
