Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

We are currently in the winter months, and I confess to having forgotten how cold it can be in Hobart sometimes. There have been some bitterly chilly days that have dumped snow on the mountain, and I’ve had to rug up even in my office.

We are now into August, though; the last of the hiemal months (there’s a new word for us all!). Australia lacks deciduous trees (with the odd exception) so our vegetation doesn’t appear so starkly skeletal during the depths of winter as would be typical for the northern hemisphere, but there is still a quiet sombreness to the green. Now, however, crowds of wattles are shouting their yellow blossoms cheerfully across the hillsides. The only downside of this enthusiastic brightness is that the resulting plethora of pollen is not welcomed by hay-fever sufferers.

In one of my walks yesterday I had seen a little roadside flower, and today I wondered just how many flowers — apart from wattles and spring bulbs and little roadside flowers — were ready to shake off the depths of winter. So, for 12 of 12, I thought I might see if I could find at least 12 on my 3km walk around the nearby streets as evidence of the imminent arrival of spring.

The evidence was abundant. August may be designated as winter, but on today’s evidence it might as well be spring.

Indeed, spring had sprung so much that I have cheated and included three extra photos here, in addition to the 12 in the collection. There are snow drops to the right, some pretty but anonymous thing on the left below, and a pelargonium on the right. And there were still more shots that I just didn’t include at all.

The 12 of 12 collection is here.

After spending part of the day in the garden, and admiring our magnolia out the front, as it has come into blossum with beautiful pink flowers, I was quite thrilled by your 12 of 12 theme for this month!!!

I actually tried to find a magnolia — and there were a few around — but I missed the opportunity. I wanted a whole tree rather than a close-up of a single flower. The flowers always look windblown and random, but a full-grown magnolia in bloom is just a beautiful thing.
