Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

There’s always a “but” …

I was going to work all day today, prior to heading back home this evening, but I had discovered that there were three caches a few train stops away in some lovely gardens on islands in a lake. So, I found the cache here on campus first (the one that, if worse came to worst, would at least get me one Singaporean find since I didn’t find the one I looked for yesterday on Sentosa Island), and then caught the bus and MRT back to the Jurong gardens.

Here one of the islands has Chinese themed gardens, a pagoda and a set of statues for each of the 12 characters for the Chinese yearly cycle. The other island has a Japanese flavour, and both are very lovely. There were many people walking and jogging around the area, and what seemed to be one or two tai chi sessions taking place as well.

It was, of course, very hot and humid but I found the caches (even the one that is marked as “disabled”). I also encountered bitey ants, but fortunately escaped with only a nibble.

It was an enjoyable morning … but now I need to get back to work.

Descriptions of the photos follow.

  1. (top right) The Chinese Pagoda.
  2. (below) Small bridge in the Chinese Garden with the different “Year of the …” statues, with a view of the bridge over to the Japanese garden island
  3. For those of us born in the Year of the Dragon, there is always a “but”. (In fact, all the other descriptions that I looked at came with caveats as well!)
  4. Bridges in the Japanese Garden.
  5. View of the Japanese Gardens from the non-functioning waterfall.
