Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Walk photo 1

I’ve been trying to go for a 2.5km-3km walk on most days, a task I can accomplish in half an hour if I push it (which is, in fact, part of the objective). Fitting the task into my day is sometimes challenging, but I simply need to get more exercise.

I have now decided that I might add a creative challenge to the walk, namely to take an interesting photo along the way. I’m not sure how sensible/realistic this plan is, but we’ll see how it goes. I’d like to improve my “eye” for a good photo. The 12 of 12 project has done this a little bit, but my bigger purpose with that is to document some of my “everyday history” rather than to “do photography” per se. I’m hoping this new project might focus on the photography itself (pun semi-intended), because I won’t be trying to document my walks as such but to look for good shots.

So, tonight — as I came home from work and before heading off to Scouts — I squeezed in a 2.5km walk along the Rose Bay foreshore. It was dusk, on a cold and overcast day, but the bridge looked good against the brooding backdrop of Mt Wellington. I only had the iPhone, but, apart from some low light graininess, the photo turned out quite well. Of course, it helped that the subject was fairly photogenic without too much effort on my part. (I can’t help if I try to pick scenic routes for my walks whenever possible!)
