Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Cheesecake

As mentioned in a previous post, one of my (few) culinary talents is to make cheesecake at the end of a day’s bushwalking on multi-day hikes. Before marveling too much at my brilliance, it has to be acknowledged that it is, in fact, a no-bake packet mix … but there are all sorts of tricks that have to be employed to bring one to fruition in the frying-pan lid of a Trangia cooking set. The recipe calls for milk, which, on a bushwalk, means powdered milk. For the recipe to succeed you have to make up your powdered milk a little thicker than normal. This makes the filling mixture easier to beat to a consistency that will set in the absence of any facilities to “allow to set in a refrigerator for one hour”.

The beating is supposed to be done with “an electric mixer on high for two minutes”, which is also impossible on a walk, and so one must exercise one’s wooden-spoon-wielding arm with great rapidity. Fortunately on this weekend’s Scout trip one of the Scouts provided appropriate electric mixer sound effects (the fact that these sounded like a motorbike working its way up through the gears before careering around a corner and crashing is completely irrelevant).

And, finally, the finishing touch is to grate some chocolate over the top before serving.

An extra anecdote was added to cheesecake lore on the weekend. Being Scouts with an innate lack of enthusiasm for washing up, and with dessert coming at the end of the meal, not everyone wants the hassle of using an extra bowl for their slices of cheesecake. As a result, the odd one or two Scouts opted to receive their serves with their open hands. As one of them said “I’m embracing my camping hoboness”!
