Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

After some 42 years my parents are moving from the family home, since they have found themselves a nice new cosy place that will be a little easier for them to maintain. They are very excited about this … the only real down side is the fact that they actually have to move, and deal with the detritus of four decades of living in a place that was big enough that you could usually find somewhere to store anything you thought might be useful for who-knows-what-or-when. This is especially problematic when said detritus include a large book collection … and three printing presses. Fortunately—miraculously, even—Dad has found a good home for the big printing press; and he has even brought himself to dispose of a large number of other things.

Anyway, I arranged for a few days of leave so that I could help them move, and one of those days happened to coincide with this month’s 12 of 12 appointment. I have spared you most of the “packing and moving” photos (and images of the chaos of 9 kids and 8 adults in the lounge room for the last family dinner at the old place under its present occupants), because I also had a break catching up with a friend for lunch near Salamanca Place, and so I managed to get a few “Hobart winter scenes” shots. The photos are nothing special, but here they are for the 12 of 12 record.

Sorry to hear you were here a little longer than you anticipated. The mountain looks fantastic today in bright bright sunshine. Hope your parents settle easily into their new ancestral seat. And that we catch up with each other next time you’re here. Don’t think my tax cheque will stretch to a Melbourne weekend this winter – the rangehood and dishwasher have just carked it!

  • You seemed to be more inspired by the ‘going to lunch in town’ part of the day rather than the cleaning/packing part of the day!! Fair enough – there’s been LOTS of packing in your life lately.
