Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

Everything takes longer

Even when you think you have allowed time, even when you think everything is under control, even when you think that your “systems” are working just how you want them, SOMETHING inevitably happens.

This blog post — about the fact that it has taken me far too long to get organised for Jamboree and that my head is scattered over far too many places — was meant to have a picture attached showing all the junk I’m taking, but WordPress and/or my web-host are conspiring to be cantankerous and it’s not working. I don’t have time to fix it.

In the absence of the picture it’s barely worth trying to explain how BIG the bags are in the non-existent photo — and WHY — except to say that I’m taking far more stuff for 12 days of camping than I did for three months in the UK … but on the other hand I didn’t need a stretcher, pillow, 1 litre of sunscreen, gaffer tape, cable ties, sleeping bag, four UHF walkie talkies, spare cord, box of tissues, and a spare tent. Unfortunately I don’t have room for my comfy chair and so this means bench seats for the duration.

I should, of course, be doing some of the work that I needed to do, which involves thinking about teaching functions and calculus to teachers … but all I can do is think the words “differentiation” and “integration” … and that’s the sum total of my inspiration! That’s the trouble with a late afternoon departure: I just fritter away the time, and even the things that have gone right have still expanded to fill the time.

I’ll be glad when life gets back to normal.

Someone, it may have been Johnson, apologised for writing a long letter but said he didn’t have time to write a short one. I think packing follows the same principle – it takes much more time to pack a small bag than a series of big ones. And if you try to rationalise (or differentiate, or integrate) you invariably end up needing whatever it was you left out. Take it all – you have an army of Scouts to be your bearers and porters!

This begs the inevitable question; what is “normal”?
