Dramatis persona*

helenhead Helen Chick

I've always wanted a bumper sticker that said "I'm a female, LDS/Mormon, Scout leading, geocaching, piano-playing, bicycling, mathematics educator with a PhD in maths ... and I VOTE"!

I think this makes me a minority group of cardinality 1!

* Since there's only one of me and "personae" is plural (I think), I've gone with dramatis persona.

You’ve gotta start somewhere …

Well, here I am.

It has taken me far too long to get this up and running (and there are some things I intend to refine after I’ve posted this), but this is my first blog entry, on my own web-site. I haven’t quite decided how self-indulgent or vain this makes me (or, indeed, how creative I have become with my task avoidance strategies (there’s a huge pile of marking that I should be doing instead!)), but I can rationalise it … a bit! You see, I am going to be travelling around later in the year and a blog seemed like a good idea for keeping in touch with family and friends.

I suppose I should see what happens when I insert a photo. I hope that I will have some control over the placement.

sunlitbrackenAah, I think this is going to work out quite well. WordPress and the Atahualpa theme seem to provide simple but sufficient control, and despite the fact that it all bears a strong resemblance to the LMS (the uni’s on-line learning management system, which has been known to drive me completely nuts), I think I can cope!!!

The photo, by the way, is of some bush up near Trentham Falls in Victoria. I was testing out my new small digital camera to see how it behaved in different lighting conditions … while also going in search of geocaches. This was back in January 2009, and it was a good day: the camera results were satisfying enough, and I found the caches I was looking for. What more could you ask? (Well, actually, it would have been nice if there had been a bit more water coming over the falls)

I think that’s enough playing for the moment. You may now return to your scheduled programming.

Very nice! (And a prime opportunity to claim an FTF!)

    Hi Helen,

Well, There would be no point in me making a bumper sticker that read:

“I’m a male, Baptist, Scout Leading, Geocaching, Suspended Taxi Driver”, and I VOTE, because nobody would see it.

The true story is that following a health issue that has presented itself, a number of learned doctors wondering what has gone wrong, are asking a lot of questions, and shortly before Easter, asked me to voluntarilly stop driving, in the interests of community safety. I have complied with that, so now can’t work.

but I would guess that in Australia, there probably is one other female LDS Scout leader who caches votes and plays the piano, but not many more.

Now, If you are into maths, you will probably like my next hide, which will be in about a month.

    Regards,

    Wally
